bookblast book club summer 2026 hatchards

The BookBlast® Translation Book Club meets in person at 6pm on the second Monday of each month at Hatchards, Piccadilly, to discuss engaging, well-written fiction in translation from the past decade, offering thought-provoking reads that illuminate global cultures. Surprise guests include translators, publishers, editors or authors who sometimes join in, offering insights into their work and experiences.

Who better to introduce readers to cultures from around the world than leading writers translated into English?

On Monday 11 May at 6pm we are discussing

My Women Yuliia Iliukha trs. Hannah Leliv

“Yuliia Iliukha’s My Women, translated from Ukrainian by Hanna Leliv, is an urgent and poignant story collection of women confronted by the countless brutalities of war. It locates the voices and devastating experiences of those who have been silenced, those who have lost loved ones, those who have fought and persevered, and those who have broken down. Through poetic repetition, the nameless protagonists, “My Women,” bring succinct and emotionally charged stories that evoke life during war in Ukraine with an intensity that is at times excruciatingly difficult yet deeply moving,” Good Reads

On Monday 8 June at 6pm we are discussing

The Roof Beneath Their Feet by Geetanjali Shree trs. Rahul Soni

“Chachcho lives with her frigid husband in Laburnum House, a cluster of a hundred or more houses that share a common roof. She leads a lonely life until she takes in Lalna, who’s been dumped by her husband. Their closeness makes many uncomfortable. Then suddenly one day, Lalna has to leave, to return only after Chachcho’s passing. There are rumors and there is gossip in the neighborhood while Chachcho’s nephew tries to piece together his memories of the two women, one of whom is his mother. The truth he is searching for could destroy him forever . . . one of the best contemporary Hindi novels you have read in a long time,” Good Reads
