Our Translation Book Club at Hatchards Celebrates One Year!
As international relations and intercultural understanding grow dangerously strained, reading literature in translation has never been more vital.
Who better to introduce readers to cultures from around the world than leading writers translated into English?
While hundreds of book clubs across the UK and US explore books written in English, far fewer celebrate translated literature from abroad. This initiative helps bridge that gap.
Join us in person at Hatchards, Piccadilly, on Monday 10 March at 6pm for an exclusive opportunity to meet in person, Claudia Piñeiro, Argentina’s bestselling crime writer, and hear her discuss Elena Knows (Shortlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2022) along with Carolina Orloff, publisher at Charco Press
To date, the writers discussed have included: Andrey Kurkov (Ukraine), Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt), Annie Ernaux (France), Dubravka Ugrešić (Croatia), Olga Tokarczuk (Poland), Ismail Kadare (Albania), Stéphane Carlier (France), and Hiromi Kawakami (Japan), S.J. Naudé (South Africa).
Upcoming titles feature fiction by Claudia Piñeiro (Argentina), Muharem Bazdulj (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Karim Kattan (Palestine), Olivier Norek (France), Véronique Tadjo (Ivory Coast), Dorothy Tse (China).
The BookBlast® Translation Book Club at Hatchards Piccadilly, meets in person on the second Monday of each month. Hosted by Georgia de Chamberet – translator, writer and founder of BookBlast® – books published over the past decade are discussed. Surprise guests include translators, publishers, editors or authors who sometimes join in, offering insights into their work and experiences. The books chosen by Hatchards booksellers and myself are well-written-and-translated, engaging storytelling.
Highlights on the BookBlast® YouTube Channel, recordings of the discussions on various podcast channels, or reviews and Q&As for BookBlast® Diary give our international subscribers an opportunity to be involved when attending in person is not possible.
